Rosetta Stone and Bookkeeping

Many people have heard of the Rosetta Stone.  Because it had the same thing printed out in Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Egyptian script, it became a key to understanding the Egyptian language using the Greek which was already known.  But what was printed on this stone?  Tax codes.  It was published in three different languages because the religious leaders understood one and the general public and tax collectors the other two.  (Read more here.)

If you look at all of your assets, liabilities, equity, income, and expenses and say, “It’s all Greek to me,” it is time to give us a call.  Contact us to help you with your bookkeeping needs.

Mick Jagger

Even if you aren’t a fan of Rock-n-Roll or the Rolling Stones, you’ve probably heard of Mick Jagger.  He was born in 1943 and achieved worldwide fame as a singer, songwriter, actor, and film producer.  He now has a “Sir” in front of his name as well.

But, did you know, that he started out studying accounting and finance on a scholarship at the London School of Economics?  Just think of what the music world would be like today if he had continued on that path.

Wondering if you can get Mick Jagger to handle your bookkeeping?  When that course of action falls through for you, contact us for help with your bookkeeping needs.

Happiness Is

Happiness Is When
Debits = Credits

Debits and credits can seem quite confusing.  Many people are used to receiving money when they get a credit from their bank and so associate that with being a good thing.  They may then conclude that a debit is the opposite, so therefore a bad thing.  This is especially so in the banking world because a debit from the bank means they are taking money from your account.

Debits (dr) and credits (cr) themselves are neither good nor bad.  They are simply the two possible entries that can be made in a double-entry bookkeeping system.  A debit will increase an asset or expense, and a credit will increase a liability, an equity, or an income. These terms, and double-entry bookkeeping, were first used in 1494 by Luca Pacioli.  He described this system that was used by Venetian merchants, traders, and bankers.

If debits and credits still weigh you down, let us give a helping hand.  Contact us if you need help with the bookkeeping for your business!

Al Capone

Al Capone was a crime boss in Chicago from 1925-1931.  His nickname was “Scarface,” but he was also known as a gangster, bootlegger, racketeer, and boss of the Chicago Outfit.  He had political alliances that helped him stay out of trouble in Chicago until the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929.  The audacity of this atrocity to have taken place in broad daylight damaged his reputation and caused people to want justice.  Still Capone went untouched.

Capone had a plethora of crimes to which he could have been charged, but he was always one step ahead of the law.  But his lavish lifestyle caught up with him in the end.  Who brought Al Capone down in the end?

Everyone has probably procrastinated at one time or another.  They may then blame poor time-management skills, but do people turn away from what they SHOULD be doing because they don’t have time, or because it isn’t what they WANT to do.  Either way, the one who suffers is the YOU of the future.

According to Tim Urban, “No one ‘builds a house.’ They lay one brick again and again and again and the end result is a house. Procrastinators are great visionaries—they love to fantasize about the beautiful mansion they will one day have built—but what they need to be are gritty construction workers, who methodically lay one brick after the other, day after day, without giving up, until a house is built.”

The topic of procrastination is very appropriate for this time of year.  Soon it will be time to “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.”   Now is the time to be sure all of your bookkeeping is up-to-date for your business.  You don’t want the end of the year to sneak up on you – you have three months to get your books in a good place.  So whether your procrastination stems from lack of time or desire, be kind to your future self and contact us to start helping you today.
